Mary Colter’s buildings had their roots in the history of the land. Here, a few tourists take in the vast panorama of the canyon. (GCNP #17024.)

“A mile deep, miles wide, and painted like a sunset,” reads this Santa Fe Railroad magazine dated 1910. The Fred Harvey Company realized there were handsome economic possibilities at the Grand Canyon. The company operated gift shops, newsstands, restaurants, and hotels in cooperation with Santa Fe Railroad, as early as 1876. (GCNP #9507.)

It soon became apparent that visitors would be interested in purchasing Native-American crafts while at the canyon. Typical of Colter’s design, the Hopi House was built with materials at hand, creating a dwelling in harmony with nature. (Courtesy of the late Edward Aschoff.)
